Glutamine: Benefits, Uses and Side Effects
Jan 13, 2023, 7:52:12 AM

L-glutamine is one of the two existing forms of glutamine amino acids. It is produced in muscles and plays critical roles in biological processes such as immune function, the build and repair of intestinal tissues, regulation of kidneys, and protein synthesis.
On the other hand, the other form of glutamine called D-glutamine plays a lesser important role in human function.
L-glutamine is also known to serve a secondary role as a fuel source for cellular energy. It contributes to the production of some key compounds, which include building blocks of DNA called purines and glucose.
Health Benefits of glutamine supplements
1. Glutamine for Trauma Recovery
One of the common usages of L-glutamine is in the case of trauma. It is known that by promoting immune function and protein synthesis, the body becomes better at getting recovered from severe surgeries and traumas.
Glutamine is known to be a key nutrient for severely ill patients like patients with burns. L-glutamine promotes wound healing and also prevents bacteria from getting spread to the bloodstream. It can be delivered via enteral tube feeding or through a vein (intravenously).
2. L Glutamine for Athletic Performance
A review conducted in 2008 indicates little evidence that supports this claim that L-glutamine supplements give benefits to athletes.
Typically, L-glutamine supplements are used to decrease recovery time after an intense exercise session. However, clinical trials have not tested this so far.
3. Glutamine for Intestinal Health
Glutamine provides benefits for immune function, typically in terms of intestinal health. Intestines are known to cover a major portion of the immune system in humans.
It is because that there are many intestinal cells present inside the body along with trillions of bacteria that contribute to immune function.
4. Glutamine powder for Immune System
Glutamine plays a major and critical role in the immune system. It is considered as a fuel source of immune cells, which are intestinal cells and white blood cells. However, its level gets decreased due to burns, injuries, and surgeries.
Ironically, if your body requires glutamine more than its capacity to produce it, the body breaks down the protein stores like muscles to gain amino acids.
Side Effects of L Glutamine powder
Being the most abundant amino acid found in the human body, L-glutamine has been considered a safe dietary supplement for a long period now. Even higher doses of L-glutamine presumably do not cause any major side effects.
Having said that, few studies have investigated the long-term side effects and toxicity of L-glutamine supplements on the body.
There is little evidence available suggesting that L-glutamine supplements may cause seizures among people having anticonvulsant medications.
Also, L-glutamine is metabolized inside the liver; hence, it must be avoided by people with severe liver disease.
Conclusion
Glutamine is an amino acid present in two forms: L-glutamine and D-glutamine.
L-glutamine is the most vital form of amino acid, which is naturally produced in the body within muscles. It can also be obtained through dietary sources. Typically, a normal diet contains nearly 3-6 g of L -glutamine.
L-glutamine is considered a fuel source of intestinal and immune cells, which are important for intestines health.
Sometimes in the case of any injury or illness, your body is unable to produce L-glutamine. In such a case, it is recommended to take supplements to maintain your immune function and recovery.
